Cashless gaming is intended to limit the losses of people with gambling problems, but reform advocates say the first trial did not include crucial harm reduction measures.

One of the first cashless gaming trials in NSW found the technology made little difference to the behaviour of gamblers.

The trial ran at food and entertainment venue Wests New Lambton, a suburb of Newcastle in the state's Hunter region, from October 2022 until June last year. "We need to see the introduction of the recommendation from the NSW Crime Commission for a mandatory cashless card that includes binding and default limits," she said.

Participants also tended to revert back to the gaming system they were used to, rather than use the new technology on offer. "It was mostly about testing the technology and a little bit of a hint towards harm minimisation," she said. The trial was held before the state government announced an expansion of the cashless gaming trial to 4,500 machines across 28 venues.
