Co-creators and showrunners Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann revealed to Deadline that season two of the HBO series will be reduced to seven episodes, although they will be 'quite big' in length.
The first season of The Last of Us debuted in January 2023, based on the post-apocalyptic video game franchise of the same name. 'The story material that we got from Part II of the game is way more than the story material that was in the first game, so part of what we had to do from the start was figure out how to tell that story across seasons,' Mazin said in the interview.
'We don’t think that we're going to be able to tell the story even within two seasons because we're taking our time and go down interesting pathways which we did a little bit in Season 1 too,' noted Mazin. The Last of Us stars Pedro Pascal as Joel, a hardened smuggler tasked with safely transporting 14-year-old Ellie across a dangerous country, 20 years into a zombie apocalypse caused by a fungal outbreak.
