The revelations are coming thick and fast, with the latest being that Microsoft was talking about buying Nintendo as recently as 2020 – the same year they bought Bethesda. While discussing a potential purchase of, Xbox boss Phil Spencer was asked by Microsoft’s chief commercial officer why he wasn’t trying to buy someone like Nintendo, and he answered by saying he’d love to do exactly that.
‘I totally agree that Nintendo is THE prime asset for us in gaming, and today gaming is our most likely path to consumer relevance,’ said Spencer. “The unfortunate situation is that Nintendo is sitting on a big pile of cash, they have a [board of directors] that until recently has not pushed for further increases in market growth or stock appreciation.’
