relating to the Activision Blizzard case in the EU is a bit of eyebrow-raising information showing off just how much Microsoft has herded people into its highest tier of Game Pass.that in just two years, from 2019 to 2021, on PC, Game Pass’s Share of Microsoft’s subscription service revenue had increased from 20-30% to 70-80%.
On console? The increase is even more enormous, 5-10% share to 50-60%, again, in just two years. And this data is now just under two years old. Why? Because while Microsoft has made Game Pass Ultimate its most expensive offering, it’s also its best deal. For $17 a month, it folds in PC and Console Game Pass, so you can play those included games on both platforms, including all its high profile day-one releases like the upcoming Starfield, it comes with EA Play, plus it includes an Xbox Live Gold subscription, which on console, is required to play multiplayer online.
This is also ahead of Microsoft launching Xbox Game Pass “core” which is essentially just what they’re converting Gold into. It has created a weird situation where Core has Gold online access but not full access to Game Pass, but Xbox Game Pass has Game Pass, but not Gold online access.
One weird point of data is that Microsoft, previously bragging about the rapid increase in Xbox Game Pass sign-ups, has not released any subscription totals since January of 2022, presumably right after this data was collected. Back then they announced 25 million subscribers, and if they’ve hit 30 million since then, they haven’t announced it. Perhaps they’re waiting for a bigger number, or sign-ups slowed dramatically.
