, software sales made up the majority of 2022's $57 billion total sales, leading the charge with 84% of the revenue, totalling $47.5 billion — a 7% decline from 2021's figures. Activision's Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 was crowned 2022's best-selling game, followed by Elden Ring and Madden NFL 23 respectively.
While software sales decreased, console hardware sales increased by 8% to $6.57 billion compared to 2021, with Sony's PS5 becoming the best-selling platform in terms of dollar sales, although the Nintendo Switch shifted more units. Much the same as console hardware, game accessories also saw an increase of 8% in 2022, reaching $2.5 billion. The Xbox Elite Series 2 Wireless Controller was the year's best-selling accessory.
As for the holiday season, December 2022 saw consumers spend $7.6 billion compared to the same month in 2021, an increase of 2%. Hardware sales increased by 16% over the previous year, totalling $1.53 billion and led by the PS5. Once again, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 was the best-selling game, followed by Pokémon: Violet and God of War Ragnarök respectively.
