The voice actors for Mario in other countries do a better job of nailing his voice by either matching Mario’s energy from the games or bringing their own flair to the booth. In terms of sheer accuracy, my favorite vocal performance goes to , Raphael Rossatto. Rosatto’s vocal performance as Mario really mama mias on-a tha cannoli, if you know what I mean. This is why live action actors should stick to live action, and leave animated movies and games to voice actors. A VA could be playing several roles in a movie and you wouldn’t know it. Chris Pratt just sounds like Chris Pratt.
Counterpoint - It's his origin story. He's not going to be SUPER Mario until the very end. It is possible he'll be more confident and lively, and Martinet-Mario-y towards the climax of the movie. Having said all that, it's not bad. Not what we're used to, sure, but good.
At first it sounded a little odd in trailer one but it's fine now, I have no issues. Besides, snipets never do the whole thing justice (as a reverse to this, look at the likes of Balan Wonderworld's great cutscenes and opening animation vs the actual game we got...).
